RPGLab at the 2026 IEEE PES General Meeting in Montréal

2026-07-23
  • We contributed three conference papers and chaired/co-chaired two panels including IEEE PES Outstanding Dissertation Panel and a technical panel described below.

  • We also proposed a new IEEE PES Task Force, and Working Group, with colleagues, to help advance collaboration and technical development in frequency-secure grid operations, and enhance grid energy management and decision-making processes.

Technical Panel Organization and Moderation:

Xingpeng Li and Jonghwan Kwon of Argonne National Laboratory organized and moderated the panel:

Panel: Frequency-Constrained Grid Operations for Low-Inertia Power Systems

The panel brought together perspectives from a national laboratory, a grid operator, academia, industry research, and a technology company. The speakers were:

  • Jin Tan, National Laboratory of the Rockies - formerly known as NREL.
  • Yunzhi Cheng / Amro Quedan, Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).
  • Yichen Zhang, The University of Texas at Arlington.
  • Deepak Ramasubramanian, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
  • Duncan Burt, Reactive Technologies.

I delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the growing need to connect inertia and frequency monitoring, frequency-aware energy management, grid-forming resources, and practical scheduling and operational decision support.

The session drew a full house - an encouraging reflection of the rapidly growing interest in frequency-constrained grid operations for low-inertia power systems.

RPGLab Conference Papers:

Our group contributed the following three papers:

  1. Grid Operational Benefit Analysis of Data Center Spatial Flexibility: Congestion Relief, Renewable Energy Curtailment Reduction, and Cost Saving
    • Haoxiang Wan, Linhan Fang, and Xingpeng Li.
  2. ADMM Penalty Parameter Evaluation for Networked Microgrid Energy Management
    • Jesus Silva-Rodriguez, and Xingpeng Li.
  3. Data-Driven EV Charging Load Profile Estimation and Typical EV Daily Load Dataset Generation
    • Linhan Fang, Jesus Silva-Rodriguez, and Xingpeng Li.
